FREEZING HEAT
By Deborah Greaves and Helen Davies
INT. WORKSHOP-MORNING
The day is bright and sunny. The sun reflects off the ice sculptures that are at the front of the building. They wait silently to be hosed down in order to reveal their transparency.
The work shop has a sense of calmness about it. The sound projected from the row of eight freezers hum in unison as the clock on the wall ticks almost creating an orchestrated melody.
The music from the radio is heard to the back of the shop floor and the sound of the chainsaw gradually accelerates from the work room.
The sound of the chainsaw ceases and the work room door swings open and Adrian stands there with the chainsaw in his hand.
Adrian, in his appearance, seems to be a man of great authority. His height is about 5”10’ and his body proclaims the fact that he uses weights once in a while.
He stands at the door of the ice filled room with his ski suit hugging his muscles. His woollen had is fixed tightly to his head and his oversized toe cap boots allow him to wear an extra pair of socks for added warmth.
He stamps his feet, quickly removing the ice chippings from his boots whilst shaking the ice of his gloves.
The smile on Adrian’s face confirms another good job accomplished. A mist of snow is seen in the work room as he hangs the chainsaw on a hook and exits the room. The radio can still be heard and Adrian commences singing along to it.
ADRIAN
Ice, ice baby.
CUT TO:
INT. WORKSHOP-MORNING
Two ice sculptures stand frosted over. Adrian appears with a thick tubular piece of ice, melting down the one side with a house hold iron. He then carefully places it onto the lower part of the male torso.
He uses water from a hose pipe to wash the two figures down and they turn into glistening torsos. There are holes in both sculptures which become apparent as the water from the hose begins to trickle from the solid male and female organs.
As Adrian sings he turns the hosepipe off and begins using it as a mike whilst circling his handy work.
THE RADIO BEGINS TO PLAY A FRANK SENATRA SONG.
ADRIAN
“And now the end is near and so I face the final sculpture. The job I’ll say, well done as I push them in the freezer. They’ll go and melt away at somebody else’s pleasure but more much more than this I did it ice way”.
The music begins to fade as one by one the sculptures grate along the floor as Adrian pushes them sculptures into the freezer. He looks at the clock, pulls down the shutters and turns off the lights. The brightly lit room stands in darkness.
CUT TO:
EXT. THE OFFICE. EVENING
Invoices and orders are on the side of the desk. He pulls off his cloves and hat and checks his emails, he notices the red light flashing on the answer phone. Adrian presses the machine to listen to the voicemail as he continues reading.
PAUL
Alright Ade? Still not singing to your sculptures are you? I just had a phone call asking if we sculpt Scooby Doo.
ADRIAN lets out a little laugh.
Haha, I know. Anyways just calling to say that I won’t be in tomorrow morning, I’ve gotta see Lucy. Tra’ mate.
ADRIAN unaffected by this carries on with his emails, smiling
(BEEP)
RIVERS
Rivers ere mate. Hope you aven’t forgotten about our Alloween bash tonight. I’ll give you a call on your ouse phone, right, incase you don’t geh this message. All the boys carn wait to geh armered. Be there or we’ll ave to come and geh you. 8 o’clock at the Prince of Wales, Appy Alloween.
Adrian jumps out of his seat whilst leaning over the desk turning off the computer.
ADRIAN
Shit.
He looks at his watch and flusters out of the office, running back to turn the office light off.
CUT TO:
EXT. PAYING TAXI DRIVER OUTSIDE THE PRINCE OF WALES. EVENING.
Adrian turns and absorbs the city night life. Men singing with their mates and the women nattering with extra speed and volume, all with Halloween costumes on. Bats, cats, witches and wizards with hats, capes and masks.
He stands with pride being able to finally wear his new £2000 suit he purchased for this night knowing that he would stand out. His shoes shine like his hosed down sculptures with his brightly coloured shirt revealing his muscular chest.
He walks through the pub seeking his mates and eyeing up every scantily clad girl he passes. The pub is not loud with music but loud with thousands of different conversations being voiced at the same time.
The air is thick with smoke and the floor is soaked with alcohol. He instantaneously feels the heat and smells the body odour and wishes he had some cool air from the work place.
He continues to scan the room for his friends while he heads to bar to order his drinks
ADRIAN
Mines a larger and a chaser mate.
The BARMAID gives a flirtatious look at ADRIAN as she walks off to pour his pint.
ADRIAN sheepishly smiles then looks around. He starts to tap his fingers on the bar to the music.
RIVERS approaches him from behind and places his hand on ADRIANS shoulder. ADRIAN spins around.
RIVERS
Ade’ man, good to see ya
ADRIAN smiles and offers his hand out for a handshake. RIVERS laughs and throws his arms around him for a manly hug.
The BARMAID returns with ADRIANS drinks, eyes still flirtatiously fixated on ADRIANS.
BARMAID (winking)
Here you go
RIVERS (patting Adrian on the back)
Ahh, the women still luv ya then?
ADRIAN hands the BARMAID the money and once again she walks off. ADRIAN still looking after her
RIVERS
That reminds me, ows the missus?
ADRIAN
Uh, we broke up
RIVERS
Sorry, to ere that mate, when’d that appen?
ADRIAN
About 6 years ago now
RIVERS
Anyways, you remember the lad’s right?
RIVERS indicates towards the three well dressed men with him and introduces them left to right to ADRIAN.
That’s SAM, JAKE and of course you remember BILLY.
Each of them in turn, they offer there hand to shake ADRIANS hand.
They begin attacking ADRIAN with questions and innuendoes at the same time. All of them dressed in suits no less than £1000. They are finely tanned and well groomed with well cut physiques.
RIVERS
I had no idea you were still in touch with Paul, let alone business partners.
ADRIAN
When did you see Paul?
RIVERS
I didn’t, Billy saw him about a month back, that’s ‘ow we got your number, didn’t ‘e tell ya?
SAM
So what happened with the missus then?
ADRIAN looks awkwardly at the floor, BILLY stares at SAM with wide eyes warning him to stop. RIVERS notices and tries to change the subject.
RIVERS
-ah well no matter; let’s get in another round shall we?
BILLY (raises his glass)
A toast to all of life’s little surprises and victories, that brought us all here today.
SAM (jokingly)
Apart from Jake, he just turned up
JAKE (oblivious to the conversation)
I know! lets have a toast. To beer and chicks!
JAKE was considered the outcast, he was the youngest out of the friends and looks up to them, his enthusiasm is often misunderstood by the rest of his friends. SAM, BILLY, RIVERS and ADRIAN ignore JAKES toast and carry on drinking and make their way to the Fantasy lounge.
CUT TO:
INT. FANTASY LOUNGE. NIGHT.
They carefully tread down the steps of the dark lit passage surrounded by fluffy pink and red trimmings. They faintly admire themselves as they pass the many mirrors draped on the wall.
Tracking shot shows all five of them descending the black stairs. Kanye West – Diamonds plays in the background. SAM, RIVERS and ADRIAN are walking in front. All the characters look glazed and drunk, yet they walk down the stairs with confidence. RIVERS re-adjusts his collar, JAKE quickly mimics RIVERS body language and posture.
As they enter the work floor they are surrounded by women in costumes. Not just Halloween costumes but costumes of the sexual nature. High see-through 6 inch heels with masks attached to their faces.
The lads cheer as they find their way to the tired seats waiting to the back of the club. They call a girl over who is dressed like a white witch.
RIVERS rubs his hands together before digging deep in his pockets to pay for the lap dance. He stops the girl and slips a wad of notes in her waistband.
LUCY was her name. She walked over to the crowd of boys smelling of roses amidst the stale smell of tobacco that filled the air. Her body moved seductively as she floated towards them in her over emphasized heels. She collected the money for her dance, put it in her ankle strap and began to sway her body to the beat of the music.
RIVERS
Come on luv, git yer ass up ere
(RIVERS taps on top of the table)
LUCY pulls the vacant chair out on the circular table so she can step up onto the table. Surrounded by the men she starts to dance seductively, taking it in turns to dance in front of each character.
JAKE is the first, at this point JAKE is very drunk and sits there frozen nervously. His mouth hangs open with the sight of LUCY’S voluptuous figure. SAM is next, he sits there with a wide grin clutching money in an outstretched hand, staring in awe. When it comes to RIVERS turn, he casually lights up a CIGAR and watches the girl relaxed as if he’s watching light entertainment.
RIVERS
Come on, ‘ow bout a lap dance for the birthday boy
He indicates towards ADRIAN as he slips more money into her elasticised waist band.
ADRIAN leans over and talks into RIVERS’ ear
ADRIAN
My birthday isn’t for another 3 months
RIVERS (winking)
Not anymore mate
LUCY steps back down from the table and closes in on ADRIAN, leaning over him and seductively swaying. The lads start cheering ADRIAN on, ADRIAN at first, is perplexed by the amount of men looking in his direction, however he quickly loosens up, becomes relaxed and starts to enjoy himself.
SAM (teasing JAKE)
Hey Jake, what do you think she looks like?
JAKE still frozen in the same position, still fixated on LUCY, he lets out a barely audible grunt. SAM laughs to himself after receiving the reply he expected.
SAM (to ADRIAN)
Take the mask off!
ADRIAN looks around to check for more reassuring looks around the table, both RIVERS and SAM stare, urging him on, JAKE still in the same position.
ADRIAN raises his hand towards her face then hesitates for a moment as she starts to look threatened. He goes ahead and quickly pulls the mask of, he then staggers back, coming off his chair.
ADRIAN
Lucy!?!
LUCY
Please don’t tell dad
Tears slowly well up in LUCY’S eyes as ADRIAN is still frozen with his outstretched hand, still clutching the feathered mask.
The others exchange awkward glances, feeling as though they’d just missed something.
LUCY picks up her clothes and trots off as fast as her stilettos could carry her.
ADRIAN looks down to his friends looking confused.
ADRIAN (awkwardly)
Yeh, that’s Paul’s kid.
JAKE (shocked)
You almost got to sleep with your bosses daughter!
SAM nudges JAKE hard in the arm to shut him up, JAKE looks awkwardly at the floor, realising once again that he’s not one of the lads.
ADRIAN lets out a deep sigh and holds his head in his hands, partially because he was so drunk, also because he knew he had a choice to make, and how would PAUL take the news?
